Academic Requirements

High School Academic Core Course Requirements

DIVISION I, 2005 THROUGH 2007

If you enroll in a DI college between 2005 and 2007 and want to participate in athletics or receive an athletic scholarship, you must meet the following academic standards.

  • Graduate from High School
  • Complete the 14 core courses listed below
  • Present a minimum required grade point average in your core courses
  • and
  • Achieve a combined SAT or ACT sum score that matches your core-course
  • GPA in the GPA and test score indicated. (See Core GPA Test Score Index
  • for DI)

DIVISION I Core Course Breakdown: 2005 Through 2007 14 Core Courses

  • 4 years of English
  • 2 years of Math (Algebra 1 or higher)
  • 2 years of Natural/Physical Science (1 year of Lab if offered by HS)
  • 1 year of additional English, Math or Natural/Physical Science
  • 2 years of Social Science
  • 3 years of additional courses (from any of the above or foreign
  • language, religion/philosophy)

You will be a non qualifier if you do not meet the academic requirements listed above. As a non qualifier, you;

  • May not participate in athletic competition or practice during your
  • 1st year in college
  • May receive financial aid based only on need (not athletics based
  • financial aid) in your 1st year in college, and;
  • May play only 3 seasons (to earn a 4th season you must graduate before
  • the 5th year of college.

DIVISION I 2008 and Later 16 Required Core Courses

  • 4 years of English
  • 3 years of Math (Algebra 1 or higher)
  • 2 years of Natural/Physical Science (1 year of Lab if offered by HS)
  • 1 year of additional English, Math or Natural/Physical Science
  • 2 years of Social Science
  • 4 years of additional courses (from any of the above or foreign
  • language, religion/philosophy)

DIVISION II, 2005 AND LATER

If you enroll in a DII college in 2005 or later and want to participate in athletics or receive an athletic scholarship, you must meet the following academic standards:

  • Graduate from High School
  • Complete the 14 core courses listed below
  • Present a 2.000 GPA in your core courses; and
  • Achieve a combined SAT of 820 or a sum score of 68 on the ACT

DIVISION II Core Course Breakdown 2005 and Later 14 Core Courses

  • 3 years of English
  • 2 years of Math (Algebra 1 or higher)
  • 2 years of Natural/Physical Science (1 year of Lab if offered by HS)
  • 2 year of additional English, Math or Natural/Physical Science
  • 2 years of Social Science
  • 3 years of additional courses (from any of the above or foreign
  • language, religion/philosophy

You will be a partial qualifier if you do not meet the academic requirements listed above, but you have graduated from high school and meet one of the following;

The specified minimum SAT or ACT score, or; Completion of the required 14 core courses with a 2.00 GPA in your core courses

As a partial qualifier, you;

  • May practice with your team at its home facility
  • May receive an athletic scholarship during 1st year
  • May not compete during your freshman year, and;
  • May compete in the 4 seasons remaining

DIVISION III

Contact your DIII College regarding its policies on financial aid, practice and competition

New Academic Reform Standards:

  • Increased CORE Course requirements will begin in fall of 2003 and will be fully implemented to 16 CORE courses by fall of 2008
  • Student-athletes entering college in fall of 2003 will be subject to the “Enhanced Progress-Toward-Degree Standards (e.g., 40%, 60% & 80%) of the requirements for a degree by the end of years 2, 3 and 4.
  • Adjust student-athletes time demands as appropriate to assure the necessary time to meet the new academic standards.
  • More aggressive and accurate tracking of: (GSR) Graduation Success Rate and (AARP) Annual Academic Retention Rate beginning in 2003-04 academic year and each year thereafter, colleges will be required to compile and submit the term by term academic eligibility and retention statuses for scholarship athletic-students.
