Giving you the EDGE you need
With over 390,000 active high school volleyball players nationwide and only a few thousand total athletic scholarships available, you can see first hand how competitive scholarships are. PVR brings the athletes and colleges together to help create a win-win situation for everyone. You are competing with players on a national level, not just a local and state level.
Athletically, here are the facts:
- 390,034: Number of high school volleyball players throughout the United States.
- 14, 578: Number of participating high schools competing in volleyball in the United States.
- National Federation of High School Sports 2005-2006 sports survey
- 311: Number of D1 Volleyball Teams.
- 361: Number of D2 Volleyball Teams.
- 2004-2005 NCAA sports participation rates.
- 12: Maximum number of scholarships D1 programs can have.
- 8: Maximum number of scholarships D2 programs can have.
- 4,374: Total number of D1 volleyball players.
- 3,484; Total number of D2 volleyball players.
- 2004-2005 NCAA sports participation rates.
FACT: Unfortunately, not every D1 program is able to offer the maximum 12 scholarships. Maybe some programs can only fund 8 athletic scholarships for example.
FACT: Unfortunately, not every D2 program is able to offer the maximum 8 scholarships. Maybe some programs can only fund 4 athletic scholarships for example.
Let’s take a look at a BEST CASE SCENARIO: Keep in mind, this example is based on if every D1 and D2 program offered the maximum number of scholarships available, which is NOT A REALITY.
- D1 programs: 311 × 12 scholarships = 3,732 players on scholarship
- D2 programs: 361 × 8 scholarships = 2,888 players on scholarship
- 3,732 + 2,888 = 6,620 TOTAL players on D1 and D2 scholarships
REALITY:
- You are competing with players in your own state, region and on a national level for that coveted scholarship. There are only a few thousand scholarships available and there are more qualified student-athletes vying for these scholarships.
- Again, to re-state, not every D1 and D2 programs are able to fund the maximum number of scholarships.
Let us look at another example: Assume for example that each D1 program graduates 5 players and will have 5 scholarships available for that particular year. Let us also assume that each D2 program graduates 4 players and will have 4 available scholarships for that particular year.
NOTE: Coaches renew existing player’s scholarships each year, so those scholarships are technically already taken by returning players. So instead of each program having for example 12 NEW scholarships, they really only have 5 due to returning players.
- 311 D1 Colleges x 5 available scholarships = 1,555
- 361 D2 Colleges x 4 available scholarships = 1,444
- 1, 555 + 1,444 = 2,999 total number of available scholarships.
- Compare this number to the TOTAL NUMBER of scholarships available to D1 and D2 teams, which are 6,620.
- In reality, players may be vying and competing for roughly half of the TOTAL NUMBER of available scholarships, simply because the number of available scholarships on a yearly basis is far less than the TOTAL NUMBER of available scholarships.
- The number of total available scholarships fluctuates each year at D1/D2 levels. It is not a constant number.
- One year a program may have 5 scholarships, the following year only 2 due to graduation numbers etc. for example.
- There are certainly way less than 6,620 scholarships available each year in total simply due to the fact that not everyone graduates each year and each program may not offer the full number of maximum scholarships available.
