Pro-Active Marketing to get you greater opportunities

Marketing the student-athlete to colleges/universities

Once we have discussed what your interests are and what you are looking for in a college, the next phase is to start researching colleges that meet your academic, athletic and personal interests. Then we take the appropriate steps to start contacting the RIGHT colleges that meet your needs.

  • Focus on contacting VALUED CONTACTS that meet the student’s academic interests

1) This has been discussed briefly but for an example: If student-athlete “X” is interested in journalism as a major, then research is done to identify the proper colleges to contact. This way we are contacting only VALUED COLLEGES that meet the student-athletes #1 priority.

2) Secondly, other areas such as level of play, location, size of school, weather, big city versus small town environment etc are then researched to properly identify VALUED COLLEGES.

3) This way we are efficient and effective in contacting only colleges that meet the student-athletes areas of interest.

4) If a student-athlete does not have a particular academic choice, then she will just be more opening minded, which a very good thing is also. This is not an issue because we can focus on some of the other areas mentioned above.

  • Make sure we get comments from your coaches in regards to skill development, potential and ability. Compiling this and getting your coaches recommendation letters give college coaches a very strong understanding of the student-athlete.

1) This will help in determining what level of play to contact.
2) PVR can adequately review game/skills footage and help in this process.
3) Usually contact multiple levels: (D1 and D2), (D2 and D3) etc.

  • Player’s physical abilities such as “Approach Jump”, ‘Block Jump” “T-Test Time” will determine a lot and give great insight on level of play potential.
  • Involve the student-athlete in her own recruitment.

1) If the student-athlete is not involved, then the desirable results will not be attained.
* By focusing on these areas, my processes are efficient and effective. You will receive maximum results that are of VALUE.

The Student-Athletes Recruiting Portfolio

The student-athlete’s portfolio is a compilation of everything college coaches want to know about potential recruits. It covers all aspects of your academic background, athletic background and many other pieces of valuable material and information.

  • Complete and professional full color academic, athletic and personal profile
  • JO and High school schedules
  • Academic transcripts: to reflect the type of student you are.
  • Coach’s recommendations, comments etc.
  • DVD of game and skills video
    1) If coaches will not be able to see you play in person, we certainly want to get them a DVD to view.
  • On-line web page that is viewable by coaches 24-7
  • Detailed cover letter introducing yourself and communicating why you are interested in their program.
o The cover letter is created for a purpose and not just a letter to say hi. It is very defined and is utilized to show interest, inquire and ask questions. So it is very detailed and to the point. I can give or show examples.
  • Any local newspaper articles
  • Team honors or awards
  • Conference or state honors and awards
  • All of your academic accomplishments
  • All of your extra curricular activities such as volunteer work, community work, church activities, school programs or organizations you are a part of.

NOTE: I go over all this information in great detail during our meeting or phone consultation so it is clear what is done.

How are college coaches contacted?

Premier Volleyball Recruiting prefers to contact coaches via direct mail initially by forwarding college coaches the student-athletes detailed recruiting portfolio. PVR has been able to get excellent comments in regards to the quality of information that is provided and the detail that is associated with it. This is the INITIAL METHOD OF CONTACT. Other quality methods are listed below and are utilized as well in a very effective manner.

Also, it is VERY IMPORTANT to involve the student-athlete at this part of the process. I highly recommend that the student athlete take some responsibility in the area of contacting college coaches. We work together to create an introduction letter to the coaches coming from the student-athlete (she will sign the letter). PVR will create the entire recruiting package for the student-athlete.
This can be extremely time consuming and frustrating for many since most parents or students do not have all the contact information readily available. I can get everything ready, printed, envelopes labeled and packages properly organized and packed in only a few short hours because of my vast data base and resources. My system is efficient and effective and you never have to worry about doing any of the tedious, slow and somewhat boring part of the project.

  • Initial contact is made via direct mailings your recruiting portfolio to college coaches.
  • Follow up with college coaches 2-3 weeks after initial mailing with an email.
    2) Purpose is to make sure info was received.
    3) Do coaches need any additional information?
    4) Great opportunity for students to start corresponding with coaches.
    5) Student-athletes can start finding out if coaches are interested and what their recruiting needs are for that particular year.
    6) Coaches are very busy, so this puts the process in the student-athletes court to follow up, communicate and be the aggressor.
    7) PVR will email college coaches directly about the student-athlete and her recruiting portfolio.
    8) Fax college coach’s directly the recruiting portfolio.
    9) Web site access to student-athletes online information and DVD.
    10) Student-athlete will also be given efficient and effective methods to communicate and ask appropriate questions to college coaches.

What is next

The next phase is one of the most important aspects of the recruiting process. COMMUNICATION WITH THE COACHES!!! I can’t stress this area enough. It can make or break your opportunities. I will supply you with proper questions that you can ask coaches throughout the process so you will be able to learn as much as possible about each college and program.

  • We will discuss the importance of RETURNING all requested information coaches send you in a timely manner (questionnaires, forms etc).
  • Importance of researching colleges that contact you via the internet.
  • We will cover the importance of possibly attending some camps on the college campus’s that you are interested in.
  • Taking visits whether it is official or unofficial.
  • Don’t get in the mindset of ASSUMING things. Always stay in contact with coaches on a regular basis so they always know of your interest. If you fail to reply to a coach after 4-5 weeks for example, the impression you are giving is that you do not have an interest.
  • Much more will be covered but this is a great starting place to concentrate on.
